He proved to be much more than just a rapper and obviously went on to have a massively successful film career. He’s one of the most well-known actors around and, to be honest, is still one of my favorites. He can make a bad movie good and a good movie great.
2. Justin Timberlake
Top movies: Two Smoking Barrels, Quadrophenia
Justin was never a stranger to acting; he got his start on the Mickey Mouse Club, which married acting with singing and dancing. But when he started up with the boy band ‘NSYNC, it was clear his path was going to be down the music route. With his falsetto and dashing good looks, it was no surprise that he became a megastar. But it’s been many years since he brought sexy back, and he said many times that he had started to enjoy acting more, leaving all of us worried he may never return. But he has returned, with his soulful falsetto and pretty hair in tow.
3. Mos Def
Top Movies: Be Kind Rewind, The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Most people know of Mos Def as a musician. He is a favorite hip hop artist to many, but I think he a pretty talented actor. Hip Hop has a lot of theatrics in it and he is a great performer. He did a great job opposite Jack Black in Michel Gondry’s flawed, but creative Be Kind Rewind. But I have to say one of the best things he’s done were his appearances on The Chappelle Show.
4. Tim McGraw
Top Movies: The Blind Side, Friday Night Lights
I was surprised to see Tim McGraw acting in Friday Night Lights and killing it! He was as good in The Blind Side, and even though he sort of played a similar character (Southern football loving guy), I was very impressed with his acting chops. I hope he keeps it up!
5. Madonna
Top Movies: A League of Their Own, Dick Tracy
No female artist has had as much influence as Madonna, at least not during her heyday. She won a Golden Globe for her role in Evita, but most people probably know her best for role as “All The Way May” in A League of Their Own. Madonna is no stranger to playing different characters, seeing as how she “reinvented” herself year after year, giving us a different Madonna for every album she put out. My favorite role of hers was “Breathless Mahoney” in comic strip-based noir Dick Tracy. She was perfect for the part, pulling off the effortlessly sexy lounge singer/mob girlfriend.
